UNC Gymnastics Topples William & Mary

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--The UNC gymnastics team tied its school record with a team score of 195.075 to defeat William & Mary (191.575) Friday evening at Carmichael Auditorium.
Junior Lisa Companioni claimed the meet's all-around competition with a personal-best score of 38.950. She was second on the balance beam (9.800), third on the floor (9.850, a personal best), and third on vault (9.725).
The Tar Heels swept the top four spots in the all-around. Senior Brooke Wilson was second with a score of 38.875, freshman Maddy Curley was third with a score of 38.725, and sophomore Fritzie Cathcart was fourth with a personal-best 38.525.
"We matched our best tonight," UNC coach Derek Galvin said. "I'm very pleased with the team's effort. They put so much into it tonight."
Curley set two personal records by placing second on floor (9.900) and fourth on parallel bars (9.775) en route to her third-place finish in the all-around.
Sophomore Natalie Halbach placed first on the balance beam with a score of 9.900, while junior Monica Middleton also claimed a victory with a personal-best score of 9.800 on the vault.
The Tar Heels compete next on March 4 when they host Eastern Michigan and Illinois-Chicago at Carmichael Auditorium.
