GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) - LaQuanda Barksdale scored 25 points and had 10 rebounds as North Carolina broke out of a late-season slump with a 79-64 victory over Georgia Tech in the opening round of the ACC women's tournament Friday night.
The seventh-seeded Tar Heels (15-13) snapped a three-game losing streak and advanced to play No. 2 seed Clemson in Saturday's quarterfinals.
Juana Brown added 17 points and nine rebounds as North Carolina improved to 17-3 in its last 20 Atlantic Coast Conference tourney games.
The Yellow Jackets (14-14) fell to 0-5 all-time against the Tar Heels in the tournament, turning it over 21 times while shooting 38 percent.
Barksdale was held to her only single-digit scoring figures of the season in two regular-season games against the No. 8 seeded Yellow Jackets. But the ACC scoring leader got 13 in the opening 20 minutes as the Tar Heels led by four at the break.
The first-team all-ACC player then took over in the opening 10 1/2 minutes of the second period, scoring 12 points as the Tar Heels went on a 27-8 run to break the game open.
Barksdale finished 10-for-17 from the field and 3-for-3 from the foul line as she scored 25 or more points for the seventh time this season.
Milli Martinez led Georgia Tech with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
North Carolina, with its worst ACC mark in 10 seasons, was hot from the outside, making eight of its first 15 3-pointers while the Yellow Jackets managed just 3-for-11 from beyond the arc.
There were six ties and neither team led by more than five points in a close first half.
