FULLERTON, Calif.-The UNC softball team opened play in the Kia Klassic Wednesday night with a 10-9 win over the host team, ninth-ranked Cal State Fullerton. The Tar Heels (17-6-1) meet No. 11 DePaul today at 3 p.m. PST.
Wednesday's game began at 7:15 p.m. PST and didn't end until 10:30, or 1:30 a.m. Eastern time. The high-scoring game saw 14 hits by Cal State and 11 by UNC. Senior Radara McHugh pitched all eight innings for the win, which improved her season record to 10-5. She struck out seven and walked eight.

With the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the eighth, junior catcher Natalie Anter hit a two-run double to left to put UNC up 10-7. The Titans scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth, but McHugh struck out the final batter to hang onto the win.
Cal State Fullerton nearly scored to break a 7-7 tie in the bottom of the seventh, but UNC shortstop Michelle Semmes threw to Anter to cut down the potential winning run at the plate and send the game into an extra inning.
