Tar Heel Softball Splits At UNCW

WILMINGTON, N.C.-The North Carolina softball team won convincingly in the first game of Thursday's doubleheader, 5-0 against UNC-Wilmington, but was unable to pull out a second victory as the host Seahawks won 2-1 in eight innings.
In Game 1, the Tar Heels pounded out 14 hits while UNCW had just five against sophomore pitcher Michael Parrott, who improved her season record to 6-0 with the shutout. She struck out six and helped her own cause with a solo home run in the fourth inning. Junior catcher Kelly Ramsey went 3-for-4 with a double.
Game 2 remained scoreless through seven innings before UNC sophomore Lauren Parker scored in the top of the eighth on a single by freshman Natashalyn Snipes. UNCW answered in the bottom of the inning, however, scoring two runs on a sacrifice fly and an RBI single. It was the Tar Heels' first extra inning contest of the season.
The Tar Heels (13-3-1) are back in action this Saturday and Sunday when they host the Carolina Classic, a round-robin event that also includes Coastal Carolina and UNC-Charlotte.
On Saturday, North Carolina faces UNC-Charlotte at 11 a.m. and Coastal Carolina at 1 p.m. At 3 p.m., UNC-Charlotte plays Coastal Carolina. On Sunday, play begins at 10 a.m. when the Tar Heels take on Coastal Carolina. At noon, UNC plays UNC-Charlotte. At 2 p.m., UNC-Charlotte faces Coastal Carolina. All games are at Finley Field and free to the public.
