Tar Heel Softball Sweeps Furman

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--The University of North Carolina softball team earned a pair of shutout victories against visiting Furman Tuesday, beating the Paladins 3-0 in the first game of the afternoon doubleheader and 5-0 in the second game. With the wins, UNC improved to 12-2-1 on the season. Furman fell to 1-6.
In the first game, senior Radara McHugh pitched her seventh complete game shutout of the season to improve to 7-2. She struck out 10, walked one and gave up three hits. Senior Kelly Jack took the loss for Furman.
The Tar Heels scored a run in the first inning when sophomore Quinn Porter came home on freshman Emily Price's sacrifice fly. UNC added two more in the fourth when freshman Natashalyn Snipes stole home and Price scored on junior Natalie Anter's RBI single.
Carolina got on the board quickly in Game 2 with three runs in the first inning. Porter scored on a sacrifice bunt by Anter, freshman pinch runner Lauren Looper came home on a single by junior Kelly Ramsey and Ramsey scored on a single to center by Price.
The Tar Heels added two more runs in the second when Snipes scored on a single by Ramsey, who eventually scored on an error. Ramsey, the team's third baseman, was 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI.
Sophomore Michael Parrott earned the win for UNC to improve to 5-0. She struck out seven, walked two and gave up two hits. Senior Chrissy Hacker took the loss for the Paladins.
The Furman doubleheader kicks off a busy week for UNC, with eight games in six days. On Thursday, the Tar Heels travel to UNC-Wilmington for a 2 p.m. doubleheader. On Saturday and Sunday, they host the Carolina Classic, which also includes Coastal Carolina and UNC-Charlotte.
On Saturday, UNC will play Charlotte at 11 a.m. and Coastal Carolina at 1 p.m. Charlotte will meet CCU at 3 p.m. On Sunday, Coastal and UNC will play at 10 a.m., UNC will play Charlotte at noon and Charlotte will meet CCU at 2 p.m. All games will be played at Finley Field.
