Tar Heel Softball Wins One, Ties One

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-The University of North Carolina won the first game of its doubleheader Thursday, 1-0 against visiting Minnesota, and the teams tied 1-1 in the second game after it was called due to darkness.
Both North Carolina (6-1-1) and Minnesota (6-2-1) will compete in this weekend's Triangle Classic softball tournament, which begins on Friday at Walnut Creek Softball Complex in Raleigh.
In the first game Thursday at Finley Field, UNC scored the game's only run in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs, senior Michelle Semmes reached on an error. She scored on a double to left field by junior Natalie Anter.
Senior pitcher Radara McHugh earned the win for UNC and improved to 4-1 on the season. She struck out nine and gave up six hits. Freshman Piper Marten took the loss for Minnesota despite allowing the Tar Heels just two hits.
In the second game, Minnesota scored in the top of the sixth inning when pinch runner Amy Hafemeyer came home on a single to left by Hailee Nanchy. With two runners on base and no outs, McHugh relieved starter Michael Parrott and kept Minnesota from scoring again. McHugh did not allow a hit in her two innings of work in Game 2.
The Golden Gophers led 1-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh, when Carolina freshman Dionne Streete doubled to left with two outs and scored on an error to tied the game. With Anter at the plate, the game was called due to darkness, leaving the score 1-1.
In her four at-bats in the second game, Semmes provided three of UNC's five hits. Minnesota also had five hits in the second game, distributed among five different players.
Triangle Classic play begins at noon Friday and games will continue throughout the evening. The tournament includes 24 teams and will conclude with bracket play championship games on Sunday at 2 p.m.
In Friday's games, North Carolina will face Illinois at 4 p.m. and Rhode Island at 6. Minnesota is set to play Temple at noon and Ohio at 2 p.m.
