
UNC Softball Opens Triangle Classic With Pair Of Wins

RALEIGH, N.C.-The University of North Carolina opened play in its Triangle Classic softball tournament Friday with a pair of wins, both by 1-0 scores. The Tar Heels beat Illinois in their 4 p.m. game and Rhode Island in their 6 p.m. game to advance to Day 2 of the tournament with an unblemished record. UNC is now 8-1-1 on the season.
Against Illinois, Carolina scored its run in the top of the seventh. Senior shortstop Michelle Semmes doubled to center field and was replaced on second by pinch runner Lauren Looper. Looper came home two batters later when junior Kelly Ramsey singled to center. Senior Radara McHugh earned the win for UNC, striking out six and extending her scoreless inning streak to 39, equal to the school record. She is now 5-1 on the season with an ERA of 0.17.
Against Rhode Island, Semmes provided UNC's only run with a fifth-inning solo home run over the left-center fence. Sophomore Michael Parrott struck out 11 and improved to 3-0 on the season with the win.
UNC is back in action Saturday at noon with its final pool play game against Tennessee. Following games at 10 a.m. and noon, the 24-team Triangle Classic field will move on to bracket play, based on pool finishes. Bracket play begins Saturday at 4 p.m. and continues through the championship games Sunday at 2 p.m.
All games are held at Walnut Creek Softball Complex. Admission is $5. Student wearing their softball team jerseys will be admitted for free.
