WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Senior forward Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick hit two free throws with eight seconds remaining to help the Wake Forest women's basketball team defeat conference-rival North Carolina, 73-71, before a school-record 4,457 fans at Joel Coliseum Thursday evening. The win gives Wake Forest its first ACC win of the year and lifts the Deacons' record to 8-5, 1-2 in the league. North Carolina drops to 7-5, 1-2 in the ACC.
It was a game in which the lead changed hands eight times and neither team led by more than five points in the second half, but it didn't start out that way. North Carolina took an 18-6 lead in the early goings as Wake Forest committed seven turnovers in the first seven minutes of the contest. A three-pointer by Kirkpatrick at the 12:31 mark of the first half sparked an 8-0 Deacon run, and the two teams battled point for point up until nearly halftime. A three by freshman Tonia Brown gave the Deacs a 36-30 lead at the break.
The Wake Forest lead evaporated early in the second half, however, as UNC began the period with a 15-5 scoring run. Wake senior Kristen Shaffer then scored her team's next 12 points to give the Deacs a 51-48 lead at the 9:27 mark. Over the next two-and-a-half minutes, the Tar Heels converted on 9-of-10 shots from the free throw line to tie the game at 57. Wake took the lead for good, 65-63, at the 3:35 mark, but UNC continued to convert from the line to stay in the game. At the other end, the Deacs missed the front end of one-and-one foul shots on three straight trips to the line, but Kirkpatrick's two successful free throws gave the Deacs a four-point lead with eight seconds left. North Carolina made a layup with one second remaining to make the final score 73-71.
Kirkpatrick led all scorers with 22, while Shaffer added 16 for the Deacs. Brown and senior Olivia Dardy each contributed 10 points off the bench. UNC sophomore Coretta Brown was the Tar Heels' leading scorer, posting 19 points, while senior LaQuanda Barksdale, a Winston-Salem native playing in her hometown, added 16 points to go with a game-high 15 rebounds. Senior Juana Brown also recorded double-figures with 12 points for the Tar Heels.
UNC shot a season-low 29 percent from the field, but hit a season-best 84 percent of its foul shots (31-of-37). The Tar Heels also outrebounded the Deacs, 46-43. Wake shot 44 percent from the field (30-of-68).
Wake Forest completes its three-game set against its Tobacco Road rivals when it travels to Raleigh on Sunday, Jan. 7 to take on the NC State Wolfpack. Tipoff is set for 2:00 pm. North Carolina hits the road again, traveling to Clemson for a Monday, Jan. 8 matchup.
