COLLEGE PARK, MD.-The University of North Carolina women's basketball team fell to 10-9 on the season with a 55-53 loss to Maryland on Sunday afternoon at Cole Field House. After its lowest scoring output of the season, UNC is now 4-5 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Terrapins improved to 14-6, 5-4 in the ACC.
In a balanced game that included nine ties and 19 lead changes, North Carolina had the biggest lead of the first 20 minutes when the Tar Heels pulled ahead by six on a fastbreak layup from sophomore guard Coretta Brown 1:14 before halftime. A jumper from Maryland's Deedee Warley with 13 seconds to play before the break brought the margin back to a four-point lead, 28-24, for UNC at the half.
After the teams exchanged leads throughout the second half, Carolina pulled ahead 53-52 with 47 seconds remaining on a three-pointer by Brown, who finished with a game-high 17 points. Maryland took the lead with 13 seconds remaining on a put-back by Warley that eventually became the game-winner. Maryland guard Renneika Razor stole the ball on North Carolina's next possession to preserve the win for her team. After being fouled, she hit one of two free throws with 1.3 seconds on the clock. UNC could not get off a shot in the final second.
For North Carolina, senior forward LaQuanda Barksdale scored 12 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for her 12th double-double of the season. Freshman center Candace Sutton, a Maryland native, also scored 12 points.
Marche Strickland led the Terrapins with 16 points.
Maryland, which won its fourth consecutive ACC game, plays at Clemson on Thursday. North Carolina, which lost its third game in a row, plays at Georgia Tech.
