UNC Field Hockey Takes OT Win Against Penn State

ST. LOUIS, Mo.-Senior Jana Toepel scored a goal in the first overtime period Monday to give the University of North Carolina field hockey team a 2-1 win over Penn State at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge in St. Louis. The Tar Heels are 3-0 heading into this weekend's Temple Invitational in Philadelphia, where UNC will face its third consecutive Big Ten opponent, Iowa, on Saturday. Sunday's opponent will be either Towson or host Temple.
In Monday's game, neither team scored in the first half. Penn State got on the board first when junior Kiley Kulina scored on a penalty corner with 18:32 remaining in the game. Senior Mandy Robinson assisted on the play.
Carolina tied the score with 10:56 to play when junior Abbey Woolley scored from the field with an assist from Toepel. Tied at 1-1, the game went into overtime and Toepel's goal won it for the Tar Heels. Scoring with 2:19 remaining in the first overtime period, she was assisted by sophomore Meredith Keller.
For the game, the Tar Heels had just one penalty corner to Penn State's eight. Sophomore goalkeeper Amy Tran had 11 saves for UNC. "We stole this win," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "Penn State outplayed us. Without the outstanding play of Amy Tran, we would have lost this game."
