CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina softball team claimed the championship at its Tar Heel Invitational tournament Sunday afternoon with a 6-2 victory over Virginia. Carolina won all four of its games over the weekend and is now 37-13 on the season.
"I'm very pleased with the way we're playing," UNC coach Donna Papa said. "Everyone in the lineup is hitting well, our pitching has been solid and our defense has been strong."
In the championship game, UNC pitcher Radara McHugh, a junior and the tournament MVP, struck out eight and gave up seven hits to earn her second win of the weekend against the Cavaliers. McHugh struck out six in a 3-1 win over Virginia Saturday in the tournament's opening game.
Junior first baseman Beth Olen was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI in the championship game. Junior designated player Carrie Bates was 2-for-3 with two RBI.
In their first game of the day, the Tar Heels beat Radford 12-0 in five innings to set up the title match. The highlight for Carolina was freshman Quinn Porter's grand slam home run in the first inning. It was the first homer of Porter's UNC career and UNC's 33rd of the season, a school record.
In other Sunday games, Virginia defeated Radford 8-0 and Florida International beat Virginia 4-0.
