CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Senior Crystal Henderson stole the 73rd and 74th bases of her career to set a UNC record Wednesday as the Tar Heels topped UNC-Wilmington 5-0 in both games of a doubleheader. The Tar Heels are now 39-13 on the season.
In the first game, UNC got hits from eight different players, including doubles from catcher Natalie Anter and first baseman Beth Olen. Junior pitcher Radara McHugh gave up two hits and struck out seven to earn the win, her 12th shutout of the year. UNC-Wilmington's Chrissy Bennett tripled in the top of the seventh inning.
The Tar Heels pounded out 10 hits in the second game, with two each by senior Jen Klesaris, junior Michelle Semmes and freshman Quinn Porter. Freshman pitcher Michael Parrott earned the win, allowing just two Seahawk hits, both singles.
Henderson stole second in the sixth inning of Game 2 to reach 74 for her career and surpass the 73 steals amassed by Sonya Bright, who played for the Tar Heels from 1990-93. The game was halted briefly while UNC coach Donna Papa presented Henderson with a commemorative base.
The Tar Heels, 2-0 in ACC play, are back in action on Friday when they host conference rival Maryland for a doubleheader at Finley Field. The first game begins at 3 p.m.
