CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The University of North Carolina softball team beat visiting Georgia Tech Sunday, 6-1, to finish a two-game weekend sweep of the Yellow Jackets. UNC is now 45-15, equaling the team's most wins in a season since the Carolina program switched to fastpitch play in 1984. The 1992 team finished 45-18.
Carolina won 2-0 on Saturday and the score of Sunday's game was still 0-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, when UNC broke the game open with four runs. Senior second baseman Crystal Henderson and junior shortstop Michelle Semmes reached on singles and scored on sophomore catcher Natalie Anter's two-RBI double. Following Anter to the plate, sophomore designated player Kelly Ramsey belted a two-run home run, her seventh of the season, over the left field fence.
UNC added two unearned runs in the sixth. Pinch runner Lauren Parker scored on Henderson's sacrifice fly and sophomore left fielder Rosie Gustavson scored on a single by Semmes.
Freshman Michael Parrott relieved starter Erin Joseph and pitched four innings to earn the win for UNC. Jamie Smith took the loss for Georgia Tech.
Designated player Beth Warren led the Yellow Jackets at the plate, batting 3-for-4 and scoring her team's only run on Jamie Frost's ground out in the sixth. Georgia Tech is now 25-29 overall, 2-6 in the ACC, and hosts Georgia State for a doubleheader on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
UNC (45-15, 6-2 ACC) doesn't play again before the ACC Tournament, which begins Saturday and runs through Monday in Tallahassee, Fla. Seeding for the tournament will be announced early this week.
"These were two great wins for us," UNC coach Donna Papa said. " After this weekend, I feel really good about our team heading into the ACC Tournament."
