CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The University of North Carolina softball team improved to 5-2 in Atlantic Coast Conference play and 44-15 for the season Saturday with a 2-0 win over visiting Georgia Tech at Finley Field. The Tar Heels and Yellow Jackets (25-28, 2-5 ACC) face off again on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Finley.
Tar Heel pinch runner Lauren Parker scored on junior designated player Carrie Bates' sacrifice fly in the second inning to give UNC all the runs it would need. Parker, a freshman, was running for sophomore catcher Natalie Anter, who had singled to right. Anter finished the day 3-for-3 at the plate.
The Tar Heels scored their second run in the sixth inning. Anter singled to left-center then scored on sophomore Kelly Ramsey's single to right-center. The RBI was Ramsey's 46th of the season, breaking the UNC single-season record of 45, set by Beverly Smith 1992.
Junior pitcher Radara McHugh earned the win to boost her season record to 22-5. The shutout was her 15th of the year and her ERA now stands at 1.07. Jamie Smith took the loss for Georgia Tech.
Left fielder Heather Sumrow and right fielder Kori Jacobson led the Yellow Jackets at the plate with two hits each. Georgia Tech left nine runners on base, while UNC stranded 5.
Sunday's game is the final regular-season conference matchup for both teams. The ACC Tournament begins next Saturday and runs through Monday, May 1, in Tallahassee, Fla., at Florida State.
