UNC Softball Tops Terrapins In ACC Doubleheader

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina beat Maryland in both games of an Atlantic Coast Conference softball doubleheader Friday afternoon to improve to 41-13 on the season and 4-0 in the ACC. Playing at Finley Field, the Tar Heels won the first game 3-2 with a seventh-inning comeback and claimed the second game 2-0.
In the first game, the Terrapins scored a run in the fourth and another in the sixth to lead 2-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh. UNC senior Crystal Henderson opened the inning with a double. After a single from senior Jen Klesaris, Henderson scored on an RBI single by junior Michelle Semmes. Klesaris scored the Tar Heels' second run on sophomore Natalie Anter's single and Semmes reached the plate on a Maryland error to win the game for UNC.
"In all my years of coaching, that's the best comeback I've been a part of," said North Carolina's Donna Papa, who is in her 17th year as a head coach, her 15th at UNC. "Everyone worked together to make something happen. That's the way it has been for us*everyone has been contributing."
Junior pitcher Radara McHugh surrendered three hits and struck out seven to earn the win. Maryland's Amanda Bettker gave up nine hits in taking the loss.
McHugh also earned the win in the second game, pitching four innings of shutout ball to improve to 20-4 on the season. Freshman Michael Parrott closed out the game to earn the save. Junior Beth Olen doubled home both of the Tar Heels' runs in the fourth inning.
Maryland's Samantha Sweeney was 2-for-4 in game two and 3-for-6 on the day. The Terrapins also got two hits in the second game from right fielder Annmarie Browne.
Carolina, which has won its last 12 games and 15 of the last 16, now travels to Florida State for another ACC doubleheader on Sunday. The first game begins at 1 p.m.
Maryland, 22-21 on the season and 2-2 in the ACC, travels to East Carolina for a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at 1.
