
UNC Men's Tennis Defeats NC State, 4-3

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The North Carolina men's tennis team extended its winning streak to eight with a 4-3 win over NC State on Tuesday. The Tar Heels improve to 11-2 overall and 3-0 in the ACC.
NC State won #1 and #2 doubles to clinch the doubles point. Assaf Drori and Marcio Petrone combined to win 9-7 at #3 doubles, defeating Devang Desai and Ryan oward.
After losing the doubles point, the Tar Heels had to win four of the six singles matches to claim the victory. Senior Tripp Phillips easily defeated NC State's Eric Jackson 6-2, 6-0 at #1 singles. Petrone and Chad Riley also won their singles matches to give UNC a 3-1 edge. But NC State's Desai defeated Drori 6-3, 7-5 at #2 singles. North Carolina's Trystan Meniane took his match to three sets, but lost to Shaun Thomas 6-0, 3-6, 7-5 at #5 singles. The #3 singles matchup became the deciding factor and North Carolina junior David Cheatwood took an early lead in the first set. Keith Salmon rallied, taking the first set to a tiebreaker, but Cheatwood prevailed, winning 7-6, 6-2, and sealing the victory for the Tar Heels.
The #28 Tar Heels return to action Saturday when they host #15 Virginia Commonwealth at 1 p.m. at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
