ATLANTA, Ga. -- The North Carolina softball team did what it had to do to advance to the single elimination bracket play at the Buzz Classic 2000. Coming into the second day with a 1-1 record, the Tar Heels came out against the Virginia Tech Hokies and defeated them 5-0. Junior Beth Olen got the Heels on the scoreboard when she doubled home sophomore Natalie Anter. Olen finished the game 2-for-3 with two doubles. That would be the only run the Tar Heels would need, but they added insurance runs in the fourth inning and again in the sixth when sophomore Kelly Ramsey hit a three-run home run. Ramsey finished the game 2-for-2. Radara McHugh got the complete game victory by allowing only three hits while striking out six.
In the second game, the Tar Heels faced Georgia State and defeated them 3-2. The game was scoreless until Georgia Tech scored their two runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Tar Heels were held hitless until the seventh inning when junior Michelle Semmes hit a single. Anter followed that up with a single and Kelly Ramsey followed with another three-run home run to win the game for Carolina.Ramsey finished the game 1-for-3.
The two victories ensured that the Tar Heels would advance to the single elimination bracket play. They went on to face the University of Illinois-Chicago in the first round and were defeated 9-3. UIC was able to score six unanswered runs to jump out to the big lead. The Tar Heels were finally able to get on the socreboard in the sixth when Michelle Semmes singled home senior Jen Klesaris.
