At the end of its second day of play in the Speedline Invitational in Tampa, Fla., the UNC softball team is still looking for its first win. The Tar Heels suffered losses to Mississippi State (6-0) and host South Florida (2-0) on Thursday, then fell to Penn State (1-0) and Massachusetts (3-2) on Friday.
Against UMass, the Tar Heels scored both runs in the bottom of the second on a triple by senior Crystal Henderson. UNC totaled nine hits but committed three errors, including one that allowed the winning run in the top of the seventh. Junior Erin Joseph took the loss, despite allowing only one earned run. She struck out seven and gave up six hits.
Carolina, now 16-9, will not advance to bracket play and closes out the tournament on Saturday at 2 p.m. against Georgia Southern. On Tuesday in Tampa, the Tar Heels will play Illinois-Chicago at noon and Northern Illinois at 2 p.m.
