RALEIGH, N.C. -- The UNC softball team earned its fourth and fifth consecutive shutouts on Saturday at the Triangle Classic with an 11-0 win over Akron and a 2-0 win over UNC-Greensboro. The Tar Heels are now 9-0 on the season.
With the Saturday morning win over Akron, UNC won its pool and advanced on to play in the Gold bracket, from which the tournament champion will emerge. After Saturday night's win over UNC-G, the Tar Heels will face East Carolina on Sunday at noon. The winner of that game advances to the 2 p.m. championship game and will face either Alabama or Virginia Tech.
Against Akron, Carolina got all the runs it needed in the top of the first inning on a two-RBI single by sophomore Kelly Ramsey, who was 3-for-4 for the game. Sophomore Natalie Anter hit a grand slam home run in the fourth inning. Stacy Fox, a freshman pitcher from Durham (Riverside High), hit an RBI double in the sixth in her first collegiate at-bat.
Against UNC-Greensboro, junior Carrie Bates hit a solo homer in the fifth to give Carolina the lead and Ramsey added another run on an RBI double in the sixth.
UNC's defense has not allowed a run since a 6-3 win over Radford on Feb. 13. Seven of the team's nine wins this season have been shutouts, four with junior pitcher Radara McHugh on the mound and three with junior pitcher Erin Joseph.
