UNC Wrestling Falls 22-18 at NC State

RALEIGH, N.C. -- After spotting North Carolina a 15-3 lead after four matches, NC State won five straight matches, including a major decision and a technical fall, to record a 22-18 ACC wrestling victory over the Tar Heels at Reynolds Coliseum.
The win gave the Wolfpack a sweep of the Tar Heels for the 1999-2000 season, the Pack's first sweep of UNC since 1992. NC State improved to 9-4 with the win, 3-0 and first place in the ACC. UNC fell to 6-6 overall and 2-3 in the conference.
The Wolfpack took a 3-0 lead on Zach Breitenbach's 7-4 win over Nick Richmond at 184 pounds, but Clint Osborne defeated NC State's Jason Gore 3-2 at 197, UNC heavyweight Matt Kenny pinned Ngozi Collins at the 2:57 mark, and Tar Heel 125-pounder Skylar Holman won by forfeit. NC State did not lose another match until the last bout of the evening, after the outcome was no longer in doubt.
Lee Carroll turned the match around with a 12-8 upset of 18th-ranked Brad Byers at 133 pounds, and Oraefo Brown scored an 18-5 major decision over Andrew Slack at 141, notching a takedown and a near fall in the final seconds of the match. Brown's victory cut the UNC lead to 15-10.
The Wolfpack's Tommy Davis, ranked No. 14 at 149 pounds, then easily handled Josh Cowley 13-4 to pull the Wolfpack to within a point in the team scoring at 15-14. Freshman Scott Garren earned a 15-0 win over Dennis Landin at 157 pounds, taking Landin down at the 5:14 mark to record the five-point technical fall that gave NC State the lead at 19-15.
Joel Dramis then clinched the win with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Jamie Groudle at 165. North Carolina's Corey Bell defeated NC State's Kevin Boross 6-3 at 174 pounds to make the final team score 22-18.
NC State had a 22-6 advantage in takedowns, and had five near falls to none for the Tar Heels.
