Tar Heels Sweep Elon In Softball Doubleheader

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The North Carolina softball team opened its season by sweeping a doubleheader from the Fightin' Christians from Elon College. They outscored Elon 9-0 in Game 1 of the doubleheader and 8-0 in the second game. Both games ended after 5 innings of play.
Crystal Henderson got the scoring started for the Tar Heels in Game 1 by leading off the first inning with a single and scoring the first run of the season on a Jen Klesaris double. Henderson finished the game 2-2 including a walk. Sophomore Kelly Ramsey led the way for the Tar Heels in Game one by going 2 for 3 from the plate including 4 RBI's. Junior Radara McHugh pitched a shutout in Game 1 and allowed only 2 hits and 0 walks, while striking out 9 Elon batters in 5 innings of work.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Tar Heels again got a solid pitching performance from junior Erin Joseph. Joseph went all 5 innings shutting down the Elon offense allowing only 1 hit and 2 walks while striking out 2 batters. The Tar Heels led 3-0 going into the fifth inning before exploding for 5 runs off of Elon pitcher Amanda Zenter. Natalie Anter led the way for the Tar Heels attack by driving in 4 RBI's. Lead off hitter Crystal Henderson went 2-2 from the plate including one walk and she scored two runs for the Tar Heels.
Coach Donna Papa was pleased with the performance of the Tar Heels to open the season. " I was pleased with how we opened up. Crystal got on and started things for us and we never looked back. Our pitching staff did a great job. Hitting wise we made a lot of opportunities because we were aggressive. This is a great way to open up. It gives us confidence to start our season."
The Tar Heels are 2-0 on the season and they travel to Virginia this weekend to face Liberty on Saturday and Radford University on Sunday. Both games are scheduled to begin at 1pm.
