CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-The University of North Carolina field hockey team capped an undefeated weekend with a 4-0 victory over Duke on Sunday at Francis E. Henry Stadium. UNC is now 1-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play and 2-0 overall, following a 4-1 victory over Michigan on Saturday. Duke is 1-1 overall, 0-1 in the ACC.
"Everything we worked on in preseason came together against Duke," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "We played exceptionally well as a team. At the end of the game, we had seven starters on the bench and our level of play didn't drop."
UNC sophomore Abby Martin scored on a penalty stroke with 22:33 remaining in the first half to put the Tar Heels up 1-0. Sophomore Carrie Lingo added to the lead on a penalty corner 12 minutes before halftime. With 22:48 remaining in the game, junior Kristen McCann scored the game's only field goal to put Carolina up 3-0. Martin closed out the scoring on a penalty corner with 4:55 remaining.
UNC outshot Duke 16-1 and had a 7-1 advantage in penalty corners. The win was Carolina's 41st consecutive win over the Blue Devils. "Carolina plays a great team game," said Duke coach Liz Tchou. "We started the game being patient and poised but they took us out of our game plan."
Carolina looks for its third win of the young season when it visits Penn State on September 5 for a noon matchup.
