Men's Tennis Drops First ACC Match

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The 75th-ranked University of North Carolina men's tennis team lost its first Atlantic Coast Conference match of the season Friday afternoon, falling short in its upset bid as 37th-ranked Virginia prevailed 5-2 at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
Virginia improved to 9-5 overall on the season and 2-2 in the ACC. The Tar Heels fell to 9-9 overall and 2-1 in the ACC.
The Cavaliers got off to a great start in the match when they won the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead. Virginia won a close match at #1 doubles and the Tar Heels won by a similarly close margin at #3 doubles. The point was decided when Virginia's Tommy Croker and Brian Hunter defeated Carolina's Remi Adamek and Assaf Drori 8-6 in a tiebreaker to claim the #2 doubles match.
The Cavaliers went on to clinch the match by winning four singles matches. Carolina won two singles matches with junior Assaf Drori winning 6-3, 6-3 over Huntley Montgomery at #2 singles and sophomore David Cheatwood winning at #3 singles with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over John Winter.
Virginia got singles wins by 18th-ranked Brian Vahaly at #1, Hyon Yoo at #4, Tommy Croker at #5 and Brian Hunter at #6. Vahaly's 6-3, 7-5 win over Carolina's Michael Grass at #1 singles was the clinching point.
North Carolina will play host to Miami of Florida on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in the Tar Heels' next match.
