CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-The 47th-ranked North Carolina men's tennis team bounced back from a loss to ninth-ranked South Carolina last Saturday by soundly defeating the Furman Paladins 6-1 Saturday afternoon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on the UNC campus. The match was played indoors.
With the win, Carolina improved to 5-1 on the season heading into a match at 27th-ranked Virginia Commonwealth on Tuesday. The Furman Paladins fell to 4-3 on the season with the loss.
Carolina easily swept the doubles competition and then won four singles matches in straight sets to secure the victory. Junior Aron Breziner's 6-3, 6-3 victory over Lex Altman of Furman at the #6 singles spot clinched the victory for the Tar Heels. The two teams split a pair of three-set matches with Furman's Lee Nickell winning at #1 singles and UNC freshman Bjorn Rencken triumphing at #3 singles.
The Tar Heels were scheduled to play a doubleheader on Saturday but the 10 a.m. match with Appalachian State was cancelled because the Mountaineers could not travel from Boone, N.C. because of a snow storm in western North Carolina.
After playing at VCU on Tuesday, Carolina will return home next Saturday to play a doubleheader against William & Mary at 10 a.m. and UNC-Wilmington at 4 p.m.
