CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina softball team swept a double-header with visiting UNC-Greensboro Tuesday afternoon to improve to 13-13 on the season. The Tar Heels won the first game 8-2 with a six-run sixth inning and won the second game 2-1 in eight innings. Sophomore shortstop Michelle Semmes was 3-for-3 with two RBI in the first game and freshman third baseman Natalie Anter hit a two-run sixth-inning triple. Sophomore pitcher Radara McHugh struck out seven in the win. For UNCG, freshman second baseman Kristy Norton was 2-for-4.
In the second game, UNC sophomore Erin Joseph pitched a perfect game through five innings before giving up a single in the sixth. UNCG tied the game 1-1 in the top of the seventh when catcher Judy Baker tripled then scored on Danielle Mirabal's single. After the Tar Heels failed to score in the bottom of the seventh, the game went to the international tiebreaker, with each team beginning its at-bat with a baserunner on second. UNC's Bree Blythe began bottom of the eighth on second, advanced to third on Crystal Henderson's sacrifice bunt and scored on Colleen Lefferts' fielder's choice to win the game for the Tar Heels.
"The first game wasn't pretty, but it was a win and the second one was a defensive struggle," UNC coach Donna Papa said. "Greensboro really hung tough. We're happy to get the sweep at home."
The Tar Heels host Furman Wednesday afternoon for a double-header at Finley Field. The first game begins at 2 p.m.
