General:
A solid returning letterman for the Carolina freestyle sprinting corps...trained under coach John Richards at the Goldsboro YMCA...has swum year-round with his club team for the past eight years. one of the top performers in the classroom for the Tar Heels.

2001-02:
Tapped for Dean’s List in fall semester 2001...also made it in the spring semester 2002...2002 ACC Academic Honor Roll selection...at the 2002 ACC meet, he was 12th in the 100 free, 13th in the 50 free and 20th in the 100 breast...swam on 200 FR and 400 FR which placed third.

2000-2001:
Continued to be a focal part of the Carolina sprint corps, and was a fixture on the sprint relays…at the 2001 ACC Championships, he finished 10th in the 100 Free (45.65), 16th in the 50 Free (20.81), and 21st in the 100 Breast (58.29), all lifetime bests…he also was a member of the Carolina 200 free relay that finished third (anchor leg) and the 400 free relay that finished fourth (third leg)…a Dean’s List honoree both semesters...he was also named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll.

1999-2000:
An invaluable relay swimmer for the Tar Heels...was a fixture on the sprint relays throughout the year…at the 2000 ACC Championships, he placed 19th with personal bests in the 50 free (20.93) and the 200 free (1:42.43), recorded a personal best in the 100 free (46.34), was a member of the Tar Heels’ 200 free relay which placed third and the 400 free relay which placed fifth….2000 ACC Academic Honor Roll honoree…tapped for Dean’s List in the spring semester of 2000.

Prep:
Graduated from Eastern Wayne High School in Goldsboro, N.C. on May 28, 1999...swam for four years at EWHS...was the captain of his high school team for three years...was the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 4A state champion in both the 50 and 100-yard freestyles his junior year, and in the 50 yard freestyle his senior year...won high school’s student-of-the-year award...was also named scholar athlete-of-the-year at Eastern Wayne.

Given name is Michael Stephen Chenier...has one brother and one sister...was born on January 20, 1981 in Enid, Okla....is the son of Mark and Barbara Chenier...both of his parents were swimmers at Southern Methodist University in the 1970s...hobbies include snowboarding and sleeping...athletes he most admires are Mario Lemieux and former Tar Heel Matt Baldwin...biggest sports thrill was watching Mario Lemieux play his last game in the National Hockey League against the Philadelphia Flyers...Michael says Lemieux was the greatest hockey player to ever play the game..a double major in English and chemistry...wants to pursue a career in medicine.
