General: Added depth in the sprint freestyle events...a returning letter winner who looks to continue to improve as a sophomore…attends Carolina on a prestigious Morehead Scholarship…swam for the Greenville Swim Club before becoming a Tar Heel…was the Greenville Swim Club team captain from 1998-2000…won the club’s coaches award in 1997 and was the club team MVP in 1998...serves as an ESL tutor...works with Students for Undergraduate Teaching Awards...designed a Burch-Fields seminar.
2000-2001: Set personal bests in the 50 free and 100 free during the fall dual meet season...named to the Dean’s List in both semesters...had a perfect 4.0 in the spring semester 2001...named to the 2001 ACC Academic Honor Roll.
Prep: Graduated on June 9, 2000 from D.H. Conley High School…was the valedictorian of her class…was the MVP for her high school swim team from 1996-1999…was also team captain her senior year…was the D.H. Conley Female Athlete of the Year in 1999…also the Big East 4A Female Swimmer of the Year from 1997-1999…was a conference champion and an All-Conference selection all four years of high school…also a United States Swimming Scholastic All America in 1999.
Personal: Given name is Charlene Alexis Wong...has also earned the nickname “Demi” from her teammates……was born on September 4, 1982 in Buffalo, N.Y.…is the daughter of Joe and Vanessa Wong…has one brother…hobbies include classical piano, icing her shoulders and self-defense…athletes she most admires are Jenny Thompson and Amy Van Dyken…her biggest sports thrill was winning the 2001 ACC championship…biology major...Spanish minor...American Studies minor…would like to pursue a career as a pediatrician.
