Fencing Closes Out Regular Season With Strong Showing At Miller Invitational

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Tar Heel women's fencing team put together a strong showing at home on Sunday, Feb 8. The women's team closed out the regular season with a 13-1 record, posting four wins in five matches at the Miller Invitational.
Individually, Mariasole Capellua had an impeccable showing, going 7-0 at home against NYU, Boston College, and Air Force.
The team started strong, opening with a 17-10 win over NYU as all three weapon groups posted winning records. Capellua and Tatiana Zafft combined for a 6-0 record to lead the way.
In the second round, despite a close 14-13 loss to Temple, freshman Elizabeth Zigalo's 3-0 record stood out.
Carolina bounced back, beating Boston College 16-11. For the second time in three matches, all three weapon groups posted winning records. Also, for the second match in a row, women's epee saw another freshman post a 3-0 record. This time, it was Kaitlyn Zanga.
Carolina took down Air Force 20-7, as Katie McGillion-Moore and Capellua had a perfect 6-0 record against the Falcons.
Fencing closed out the day with an impressive victory over No. 10 Penn State 21-6, with women's foil and epee both going 8-1 as four fencers were 3-0 in the match.
Fencing will return to action for the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships on Feb 21 and 22 in Durham.
