Swimming & Diving Produces Successful Summer Around The World

Chapel Hill, N.C. – The University of North Carolina swimming and diving program sent Tar Heels all over the world last summer. In total, 13 Heels participated in various world and regional competitions and produced 12 medals and 22 Top 10 finishes.

Ben Delmar led the way with three gold medals, a bronze and a host of school records at the World University Games in Germany. Delmar set school records in both the 200 (2:09.50) and 100-meter (59.80) breaststroke, earning gold and bronze respectively. He also swam the breaststroke leg to win golds in the 400 medley relay and 400 mixed medley relay.

Both Lanie Gutch and Ellie Joyce claimed silver and bronze during the games. Gutch and Joyce teamed up for silver in the 3-meter synchro competition. Gutch claimed her bronze in the 10-meter synchro with Florida St.'s Kayleigh Clark, while Joyce nabbed bronze in the mixed 3-meter with Purdue's Maxwell Miller. Gutch was also part of the team 3-meter and 10-meter group that placed fourth. Sofia Knight earned a fourth-place finish in the 10-meter synchro final with her teammate Hannah Smith.

Patrick Hussey made the finals of the 200-meter butterfly for Canada, earning a seventh-place finish, while Georgia Nel was part of South Africa's 400 and 800 free relays that both finished seventh. Nel did grab bronze after swimming in the prelims of the 400 mixed free relay.

Xavier Ruiz produced an excellent summer with Puerto Rico, winning gold and bronze at the Junior Pan American Championships in Paraguay. Ruiz set the Junior Pan American record in the 100 breastroke en route to a gold medal in the event. He also claimed bronze in the 200 individual medley.

Incoming freshman David Melnychuk earned a bronze for the US at the World Junior Championships in Romania. He clocked a 1:58.13 to take third in the 200-meter backstroke. Another incoming freshman, Addie Cloutier competed at the European Junior Championships in various backstroke events.

Martin Kartavi, Nel and Aranza Vazquez Montano represented Carolina at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore. Nel helped South Africa to a 10th-place finish in the 800 freestyle relay, while Vazquez Montano took ninth in the 3-meter springboard.

Louis Dramm represented Germany at the U23 European Championships in Slovakia. He placed 10th in the 200 IM and 21st in the 100 butterfly.
