April 25, 2025 | Softball
NOTRE DAME, IND. - Carolina softball (37-14, 13-9) took down Notre Dame (23-27-1, 7-17) 9-1 in six innings on Friday, April 25.
Carolina's historic offensive outburst this season is now one for the record books, as the team shattered the previous record for most runs scored in a single season which was 366. This year's team has scored 371 runs and has at least two more games against the Fighting Irish to add to its historic total.Â
The bats woke up in the fourth inning when Carlie Myrtle opened up the game with a single up the middle that brought Kat Rodriguez and Sanaa Thompson home to take a 2-0 lead. Rayna Blackwell scored off an error to extend the lead to three in the fourth.
Notre Dame scored its only run in the fifth on a fielder's choice.
Carolina answered with authority as Blackwell hit a home run to center field, the deepest part of the ballpark, which was the 366th run of the season, tying the school record in the sixth. Lexie Roberts made history by drawing a walk with the bases loaded, and Reece Outlaw, who was pinch-running for Shelby Barbee, scored the 367th run of the season.
Following the walk, Rodriguez hit a single up the middle to score two more Tar Heels, which puts her at 82 RBI on the season, two away from setting the Atlantic Coast Conference single-season record. Barbee added one more run as she was hit by a pitch, sending Rodriguez home to make the score 9-1.
The Tar Heels will take on Notre Dame tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. EST on ACCNX.
