Softball Rolls To 5-0 Win At UNCW
April 15, 2025 | Softball
WILMINGTON, N.C. – Carolina softball rolled to a 5-0 win on the road where they allowed just three hits in its first win at UNCW since 2011.
Â
The game was rolling along when in the middle of the top of the second, lightning stuck and for the next hour and twenty minutes the game was delayed.
Â
When the game resumed, Britton Rogers went right back to work. The senior finished throwing 5.1 scoreless innings with three strikeouts.
Â
In the fourth, Alex Coleman, Kat Rodriguez, and Sanaa Thompson each singled to lead things off. Carlie Myrtle brought Coleman in to make it a 1-0 ball game.
Â
The bats went silent in the fifth, but in the sixth Rodriguez came into score off the bat of Rayna Blackwell to double the Carolina lead.
Â
Rogers faced some trouble in the sixth and Kenna Raye Dark entered with runners on first and second and one out. The junior went right to work, striking out the first batter she faced and getting a groundout to escape the jam without a run coming across.
Â
In the seventh, the slappers did what they do best, use their speed to cause chaos. Grace Jackson singled, then Lexie Roberts singled, then Alex Coleman singled, setting the table for the nations RBI leader and reigning ACC Player of the Week: Kat Rodriguez.
Â
The Pembroke Pines, Fla. native did what she does best, sending a 1-0 pitch right back up the middle to drive in Jackson and Roberts, making it 4-0. Sanaa Thompson had a productive out to make it a 5-0 game.
Â
Dark came out and made quick work of the Seahawks to lock up Carolina's first win over UNCW since 2022.
Â
The Tar Heels move to 8-3 against in-state opponents this season and now turn their attention to a final Tar Heel State opponent, a three game set with NC State beginning on Thursday at 5 p.m.
