McNeil Finishes Runner-Up, Six Wrestlers Earn Podium Finishes At ACC Championship

DURHAM, N.C. – Lachlan McNeil's runner-up finish led six North Carolina wrestlers earning NCAA automatic qualification, at the 2025 ACC Championship held Sunday at Duke.
In addition to McNeil (149), Ethan Oakley (133), Sonny Santiago (157), Joshua Ogunsanya (174), Gavin Kane (184) and Nolan Neves (285) earned automatic bids to the 2025 NCAA Wrestling Championships in Philadelphia.
McNeil opened the tournament with a 19-4 technical fall over Duke's SP O'Donnell, paired with a 4-1 sudden victory decision against Stanford's Jaden Abas in the semifinals. In the championship bout at 149 pounds, McNeil was clipped by defending national champion Caleb Henson of Virginia Tech in overtime, 4-1.
On the day, six Tar Heels ended the tournament finishing on the podium. Joining McNeil in the conference's top-three were Oakley (133), Santiago (157), Ogunsanya (174), Kane (184) and Neves (285).
In the consolation finals, the foursome of Oakley, Santiago, Ogunsanya and Kane utilized late-match or overtime takedowns to claim decisions. Neves capped off the tournament in the third-place match with a 16-5 major decision versus Stanford's Peter Ming.
Carolina, the ACC's regular season co-champions, finished fourth with 45.5 points. Virginia Tech won its first ACC title since 2018 with 91.5 points, followed by Pitt (63.5) and NC State (62.5).
