Valahovic Becomes First Three-Time Newcomer Of The Week In ACC History
February 18, 2025 | Women's Gymnastics
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina gymnastics standout JoJo Valahovic has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Newcomer of the Week for the third consecutive week, as announced by the league on Tuesday afternoon. This is the third such honor of her career.Â
Valahovic is the first gymnast in conference history to win three or more ACC Newcomer of the Week honors. She is also the first gymnast in program history to win multiple ACC weekly honors in the same season.Â
The Sagamore Hills, Ohio native was key in UNC's win at Pitt on Feb. 14 with a 196.15, its best road score of the year. She also guided the Tar Heels to one of their best road beam scores in program history with a season-high 49.35. In total, Valahovic won two events outright and set two career highs in Pittsburgh.Â
She won vault in a career-high 9.9 to eclipse her previous best of 9.875 from Jan. 24. She then won beam in a career-high 9.95, crushing her prior top mark of 9.85 done three times before.Â
Valahovic is one of four gymnasts in the ACC to record a league-leading 9.95 on beam and the only freshman to do so. She is one of nine gymnasts – and the only rookie – in the ACC to have scored a 9.9 or higher on vault.Â
The freshman has competed on vault, beam and floor in all six meets of UNC's season thus far, earning a 9.9 or better at least once on each of the aforementioned apparatuses. She leads all Tar Heels with team-high scores on vault (9.9) and beam (9.95).
Valahovic and the Tar Heels return to Carmichael Arena after their three-meet road stretch on Friday, Feb. 28, for the UNC Quad Meet against Temple, Penn and Yale. Action begins at 6:45 p.m. ET and tickets are available for purchase here.
