CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Over the past week, the baseball and softball teams participated in purchasing items for the "Share Your Holiday" initiative, coordinated by the Triangle Nonprofit & Volunteer Leadership Center.
For more than 45 years, Share Your Holiday has supported low-income families or those who are disabled and/or elderly during the holidays.
"To be able to give back to the community that supports us is so impactful," junior outfielder Sanna Thompson said. "For us, being able to do this as a team means a lot to me. Our team preaches the phrase 'it is much bigger than us.' The community and our school does so much for us, so it is great to be able to give back because at the end of the day it is about Carolina and what we can do for the community."
Social workers refer families that need this support to the leadership committee, then they work to match individuals and groups that are interested in helping by donating new gifts to these families.
"It was a great experience being able to shop for a local kid during the holidays," junior pitcher Ryan Lynch said. "It was awesome to be able to have our whole team there picking out gifts that we hope our kid will love. We just wanted to try to help the family to make their Christmas special."
The women's basketball program also hosted a book drive benefiting the Family Reading Partners Organization during its game against Boston University. Fans in attendance were encouraged to bring a book in exchange for free admission. The women's basketball team collected over 200 books that will be donated to the local organization.
"It's so cool and special that our women's basketball program allows the chance for community service at games," junior guard Sydney Barker said. "I am grateful to be at a place that serves others and wants to give back in any way we can."
