Fencing Splits With Duke To Open Season

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Fencing opened the regular season against Duke, with ten new fencers making their Tar Heel debut.
The women's fencing team bested Duke 16-11, led by the sabre's 7-2 record. The freshman duo of Samantha Maryash and Dagny Johnson highlighted the women's victory as they both posted perfect records in their Tar Heel debuts.
The women's victory was sealed as part of a 6-0 run, with freshman Kaitlyn Zanga clinching the 14th win of the dual, 5-4. She had trailed 2-1 before winning 5-4 to pick up her first win.
Women's epee also had a notable day with a 5-4 record on the strip, propelled by both Anna Temiryaev and Tatiana Zafft, bringing home four wins together.
The women's team had five fencers make their college debut, and four of them earned victories. Fiona Lee's victory was a massive come-from-behind win down 4-1.
The men's team lost a hard-fought duel 13-14. The sabre squad team led the way with six wins. Elden Wood, Finn Buchmann, and Vasko Atanassov, each notched two wins. Atanassov made an immediate impact, winning his first collegiate bout.
Brayden Gyrue's phenomenal day, which included an overtime victory, was the best showing from epee as he went 2-1. His one loss was also in a close overtime bout.
