October 6, 2025 | Fencing
SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH - Carolina fencing closed out the October North American Cup with two stellar individual performances. Peter Bruk and Dagny Johnson both finished in the top ten of their respective divisions.
On Sunday, the Tar Heels made an impression in the junior men's foil division as Bruk finished as the runner-up in a field of nearly 300 fencers. Bruk had an incredible run as he went undefeated up until the final bout. He started 6-0 in pools with a +22 indicator. Bruk won his first two rounds of direct elimination by a combined score of 11. The sophomore continued to take down talented opponents as he beat the Division I Men's Foil Champion at the 2025 Summer Nationals in the semi-finals to punch his ticket to the finals, as he won by six. Bruk has medaled in back-to-back appearances in the junior men's foil division of the North American Cup; he finished tied for third in the April iteration of this event.
Johnson's hot start to the North American Cup continued as she opened Junior Women's sabre with a perfect 6-0 record, including beating a 2025 NCAA Regional Qualifier from Temple to earn the No. 6 seed from pool play. In the first round of elimination, Dagny took down a fencer from Brandeis by nine points. The freshman followed up with a four-point victory. For her final win of the day, she took down a fencer from Northwestern as she finished in tenth.Â
