WBB Readies For Tipoff, Hosting Local Media Day
October 23, 2025 | Women's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Less than two weeks to the start of the 2025-26 season remain, as North Carolina Women's Basketball opened its doors and welcomed local media to Carmichael Arena on Thursday.
All 14 Tar Heels and head coach Courtney Banghart met with the media to preview this year's squad, as Carolina opens the regular season on Nov. 3 from Carmichael Arena against NC Central.
"It's feels early, because everything's new, and our people are learning new things, but we're excited to finally start putting this to work against other people," said Banghart. "It's an eclectic, a different, a diverse, interesting, talented, hungry group, so I hope you guys enjoy them."
Welcoming six newcomers to the fold in two transfers and four freshmen, a common theme among the Tar Heels is the connectedness of the team.
"We watch games at each other's houses, we hang out, we go out to eat together. We like to team bond, so everyone genuinely loves each other. I think that actually creates chemistry— You don't want to be on a team where you don't have any chemistry, or that you're lacking chemistry, because you won't go far," remarked Reniya Kelly. "This is a together team and so in order to go far you have to be together not be solo. And so yeah, team bonding definitely helps to win big games."
Carolina faces multiple big games ahead, heading into a loaded non-conference slate to kick off the year. Going head-to-head with multiple Final Four teams and eight who made the NCAA Tournament last year, the Tar Heels look to find what they're made of early in the year.
"It's not about how many wins 'Courtney Banghart' can stack. It's how good I can get my team to be when the ACC season comes," said Banghart. "And I think the only way this particular team can do that is to really see the standard early."
Fans have their first chance to catch the Tar Heels in action next week, as Carolina heads South to face off against No. 2 South Carolina in an exhibition as part of The Bad Boy Mowers Series – Atlanta on Oct. 30 at 6 p.m. ET. The game will not be televised, but can be heard on the airwaves on 97.9 FM/1360 AM WCHL, the Varsity Network App or the GoHeels App. Tickets for the game at State Farm Arena remain available
here.
Carolina returns to Carmichael for its season opener against NC Central on Monday, Nov. 3 at 11 a.m. ET for its annual Field Trip Day game. This game will not be included in any ticket packages and all admission to the public will be on a first come-first serve basis and complimentary.
