Gymnastics Hosts George Washington In Home Opener

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Following a record-breaking performance in last week's season opener on the road, North Carolina gymnastics returns to Chapel Hill for its 2025 home opener inside Carmichael Arena on Friday, Jan. 17, against George Washington.Â
Action commences at 6:45 p.m. ET. The meet will air on ACCNX with Matt Krause and Sydney Snead on call.Â

- The Tar Heels are ranked No. 26 this week in the Road To Nationals poll. That's 10 spots higher from where they were ranked in the WCGA Preseason Poll.
- UNC scored a 195.225 in its season opener at Alabama on Jan. 10. That set a new program record for season-opening road score, surpassing the 195.2 done at New Hampshire on Jan. 22, 2021.Â
- Carolina had a beam rotation of 49.25 in Tuscaloosa, one of the best beam performances in program history. The Tar Heels hit 6/6 beam routines.Â
- UNC's average beam rotation of 49.25 is ranked fifth nationally and first in the ACC. The Tar Heels' 49.25Â in the season opener was higher than any of their beam rotations during the 2024 season.Â
- North Carolina also ranks 19th nationally, and second in the ACC, on vault with an average score of 48.9.Â
- Gwen Fink claimed a share of the beam title at Alabama with a career-high 9.9, besting her previous mark of 9.85 done six times prior. It was the fifth event title of the junior's career, and her third career score of 9.9+.
- Lali Dekanoidze and Julia Knower were named to the ACC Preseason Watch List for the second straight year. Freshman JoJo Valahovic was tabbed to the ACC Newcomer Watch List. Â
- The Tar Heels were picked to finish fifth in the ACC Preseason Coaches Poll. The team received one first-place vote.
- North Carolina's program record for a home opener is 196.225 from Jan. 9, 2023, against NC State.Â
- 2025 marks UNC's second season in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The ACC now has six schools that sponsor gymnastics with the addition of Cal and Stanford to the conference.Â
