McNeil Advances To NCAA Quarterfinals

KANSAS CITY, MO. – Lachlan McNeil (141 pounds) collected a technical fall and decision, earning his way into the quarterfinals of the 2024 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.
The Toronto, Ontario native will wrestle No. 3 Real Woods of Iowa, tomorrow morning in the quarterfinals. Tyler Eischens (174), Gavin Kane (184) and Max Shaw (197) also return to the mat tomorrow morning, competing in consolation bracket action.
McNeil was dominant in his opening round matchup, earning the 18-2 technical fall over Michigan State's 27th-ranked Jordan Hamdan. In the second round, a late takedown against Navy's Josh Koderhandt sealed the victory for McNeil, advancing into the quarterfinals for the second-straight season.
Making his NCAA Championship debut, No. 27 Sonny Santiago fell in his opening round matchup to Daniel Cardenas of Stanford by decision. In the first round of the consolation bracket, Santiago would drop his matchup against George Mason's DJ McGee by decision, 4-2.
Tyler Eischens used a key takedown with less than 30 seconds remaining in the match against Iowa's No. 12 Patrick Kennedy to clinch his opening round decision. Eischens would fall in the ensuing second round matchup to Northern Iowa's Jared Simma, with Simma securing the win on a last second score.
Returning All-America Tar Heel Gavin Kane dropped the rematch of last year's opening round bout, to Missouri's Colton Hawks, 4-2. After falling behind 6-2 in his consolation match, Kane answered and earned a 9-6 decision, advancing to day two in the consolation bracket.
Making his third appearance at the national tournament, 15th-ranked Max Shaw dropped a close opening round bout to Stanford's 18th-ranked Nikolas Stemmet by decision, 6-4. Bouncing back in consolation action, Shaw defeated ACC opponent Krystian Kinsey of Virginia by decision, later in the evening.
