Vazquez Repeats As ACC 1-Meter Champion
February 21, 2024 | Swimming & Diving
GREENSBORO, N.C. – North Carolina diver Aranza Vazquez Montaño won the ACC 1-Meter championship for the second year in a row with a score of 336.05 at the ACC Swimming and Diving Championships on Wednesday at the Greensboro Aquatic Center, one day after winning her third ACC 3-Meter title.
Vazquez will look to make it a repeat, three-peat Friday in the platform competition. A year ago, she became the first diver to sweep the diving events since 2008, en route to being named ACC Women's Diver of the Year.
"It's amazing that it's happening," Vazquez said. "I had to take a break from diving. I was struggling a lot mentally, and I realized that if I wasn't in a good place mentally, I wasn't going to be a good diver. I came back with a lot of hunger to win everything."
The UNC women stand fifth after two days at the ACC Swimming and Diving Championships with 328 points, four points behind Duke for fourth place. Virginia (552) leads second-place Louisville by 79 points. The men's team sits in eighth with 223 points, and NC State leads the men's field by 196 points.
Vazquez's freshman teammate, Ellie Joyce, placed fifth in the 1-meter competition with a score of 273.40.
A trio of Tar Heels earned top 16 overall finishes after competing in the women's B Championship Finals. Lexi Rudolph (1:57.97) recorded an NCAA B qualifying time and took fourth place in the 200 IM. Delaney Carlton (22.46) also posted an NCAA B qualifying time and earned fifth place in the 50 freestyle, while Lily Reader finished seventh in the 500 freestyle.
On the men's side, Walker Davis (19.94), Patrick Hussey (19.10), Louis Dramm (18.88), and Boyd Poelke (19.04) registered an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 1:16.76 and set a program record in the 200 freestyle relay.
Dramm (1:43.70) and Sebastian Lunak (1:44.64) placed second and fourth in the B final of the men's 200 IM, each registering an NCAA B qualifying time.
The Tar Heels return to action on Thursday for the third day of competition. The lineup of events includes the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, and men's 3-meter diving.
Swimming prelims will begin at 9:30 a.m. ET, with finals starting at 5:30 p.m. All sessions will air on ACCNX.
