Men’s XC Punches Ticket To NCAA Championships, Women Take Third
November 15, 2024 | Cross Country
ROCK HILL, S.C. – North Carolina men's cross-country ran to a second place-finish in Friday's NCAA Southeast Regional Championship. That top two spot earned an automatic qualifier into the 2024 National Championship race in Wisconsin.
The women's squad landed on the podium with a third-place finish. They will have to wait and see if they're selected as an at-large bid for the national championship race.
The women faced tough competition in NC State and Virginia, who finished in first and second to take the two auto qualifier spots. Virginia won the race on the men's side.
The top 25 runners in each field earned All-Region honors. Brynn Brown and Fatima Alanis, who finished 11th and 12th, respectively, earned the honors for the women.
On the men's side, Ethan Strand, Parker Wolfe, Will Coogan, and Colton Sands finished in the top 25 for the All-Region Honors. Wolfe is the first male Tar Heel to win this honor four times in a career.
The men's team came out of the box fast and led the pack for most of the race.
"We got right up to the front...we recharged and ran the heck out of the second half," Head Coach Miltenberg said.
The Tar Heels battled some challenging terrain since the Winthrop University Recreation Complex was narrow and muddy from Thursday's heavy rains.
"It was hard to climb our way up in the mud, but they (the women's team) did it, and it was incredible how much they fought their way back," Miltenberg said.
The 2024 Division I men's and women's cross country selection show will air on Saturday, Nov. 16, at 5 p.m. EST on NCAA.com.
