Softball Tops App State, 5-3

BOONE, N.C. - The Carolina softball team (11-19, 1-5 ACC) earned a 5-3 midweek victory at App State (15-8) on Tuesday night. After being held hitless for the first five innings, and trailing 2-0, the Tar Heel offense came alive in the bottom of the sixth for the come-from-behind victory.
After Kianna Jones and Destiny Middleton opened the inning with back-to-back hits, Abby Settlemyre tied the game up with a two-RBI double to right field. Alex Brown then hit her first home run of the season; a three-run shot over the scoreboard to give the Tar Heels a 5-2 lead.
App State got a run back in the bottom of the sixth, walking in a run, to cut the lead to two runs, 5-3.
Lilli Backes (5-9) who pitched the complete game, then set the Mountaineers down in order in the bottom of the seventh to seal the win. Backes finished with five strikeouts, allowing three earned runs and five hits with three walks.
Up next, the Tar Heels welcome Liberty to Anderson Stadium on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
