Vazquez Finishes Sweep Of ACC Diving Gold Medals
February 17, 2023 | Swimming & Diving
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNC junior Aranza Vazquez won the platform diving competition Friday night as the 2023 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships and became the first diver to sweep the 1-meter, 3-meter and platform competitions since 2008.
Vazquez posted a final score of 337.05 to edge Louisville's Else Prassterink, who registered the top score in the preliminaries, by 3.85 points to win the second platform championship of her career. She also claimed the gold as a freshman during the 2021 ACC Championships.
Vazquez won the 3-meter competition on Tuesday night and then recorded an ACC Championship meet record on the 1-meter Wednesday to complete a sweep of the springboard events.
She only claimed one medal a year ago, winning the bronze in the 3-meter springboard as a sophomore.
In addition to winning the gold medal in the platform competition as a freshmen in 2021, she also finished in first place in 3-meter springboard, while claiming the silver medal in the 1-meter springboard.
On the swim side of the competition, Ellie VanNote placed eighth in 200-yard butterfly with an NCAA B qualifying time (1:57.26), while Grace Countie and Sophie Lindner finished fifth and eighth, respectively, in the 100-yard backstroke meeting NCAA qualifying standards as well.
Skyler Smith came in seventh place in the women's 100-yard breaststroke and Patrick Hussey claimed sixth place in the men's 200-yard butterfly.
Both the UNC women and men's team held firm onto their positions in the team standings. The Tar Heels' women are in fourth place and the men occupy seventh heading into the final day of competition.
The championships continue Saturday at 9:30 a.m. with preliminary events. Saturday's finals events start at 5:30 p.m. They air live on ACC Network Extra and are accessible via the ESPN app. Direct links to the ACCNX feeds and live results are available at theACC.com.
