
Fencing Wraps Up Successful Weekend At Garret Penn State Open

STATE COLLEGE, Penn. – The North Carolina fencing team wrapped up two days of competition at the Garret Penn State Open at Penn State on Sunday to open the 2023-24 slate.
"It was a great showing for the first competition of the year," head coach Matt Jednak said.
"Our fencers demonstrated that they're mentally and physically prepared to put everything we've been practicing to work. They're ready to push themselves to their limits to secure some great results and have a successful season."
The women's team was highlighted by Iman Tucker and Sophia Kovacs who both took bronze in saber. In epee, Anna Temiryaev and Nicole Milewski placed in the top-12, while Sofia Molho finished No. 10 in foil.
On the men's side, Boris Muga and Shekar Jayendra each placed in the top-10 in epee, while Nick Baumstein placed in the top-10 in foil. Kevin Maia Lima also placed No. 15 in foil.
Five Tar Heels placed in the top-15 in saber: Elden Wood (No. 5), Nicky Wind (No. 6), Alec Mulvaney (No. 10), William Wun (No. 11) and Noah Shepanek (No. 15).
