Strong Showing For Fencing At Northwestern Duals
February 8, 2022 | Fencing
EVANSTON, Ill. - The North Carolina fencing team traveled north to compete in the Northwestern Winter Duals this past weekend. The Tar Heels were part of a 16-team field from across the country. Carolina finished with a combined record of 17-6, while facing six opponents ranked in the top 12.
The ninth-ranked men's team ended the weekend with an 8-2 record, including a 5-0 mark on Sunday. The most impressive win of the weekend came against No. 12 Stanford, 16-11. The men were able to win four of their eight matches by double digits.
The No. 14 women's team came in at 9-4 on the weekend. The Tar Heels were able to capitalize on their depth and endurance in the final rounds of their rugged 13-match schedule, winning their final two matches by a combined score of 53-1.
"They did a great job of managing the tired," said UNC head coach Matt Jednak, "We tried to rotate lineups as best we could in order to be successful throughout the day."
Connor Head and Sophia Mandour led an especially dominant performance in foil. Head went 10-2 this weekend, including 3-0 against the nationally ranked Cardinal. Mandour went 12-5 competing against every ranked opponent the Tar Heels saw over the weekend. Mandour's crowning achievement was going 3-0 against undefeated and fourth ranked Cornell (32-0).
According to Jednak, each weekend is a chance to test themselves against some of the best teams in the country and the skills the team has been working on in practice.
"We have all of the physical and the mental aspects down, now we just have to find some consistency. We want to keep giving our athletes those moments against the best teams in the country. That's when they find out who they are, what is working, and what they need to train more on," said Jednak.
The Tar Heels will travel to Durham next weekend to face No. 6 Duke and a collection of other schools that showcase some of the top teams on the east coast.
"Nobody cares about what we did last weekend or what our record is. We need to put the mask down and go back at it. We need to make sure that when we are on the strip that we are in that moment, not a ranking, but just the person in front of them," said Jednak.
The Duke Duals will get underway Saturday with the men in action starting at 8 a.m., while the women take center stage on Sunday.
