Tar Heels Come Up Short on Opening Day

PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico – Despite scoring first in both games against No. 18 Baylor and No. 3 Washington, North Carolina dropped a pair of games on opening day at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge. The Tar Heels battled Baylor for 10 innings in a 10-9 setback Friday night, before dropping a 9-1 decision into the early hours of the morning Saturday against Washington.
Senior Leah Murray stole three bases between the pair of games, upping her total to 81 and tying the second most stolen bases in program history. Tiffany Tolleson holds the record with

In game one, UNC struck first by scoring two runs in the first inning and responding to Baylor's four runs with three more in the third. However, the Bears knotted the game in the fifth, ultimately leading to extra innings. Both teams scored one in the eighth and three in the ninth, but Carolina was unable to put a run on in the 10th. Baylor's RBI single by Nicky Dawson clinched the walk-off win nearly three and a half hour game.
The Tar Heels were back in action at 11:35 p.m. for their nightcap against No. 3 Washington. Carolina jumped on the board early on a one-run single to center by Zoë Goodman. However, the 2018 Women's College World Series Runner-Ups picked up steam, scoring eight runs in the final three innings for the 9-1 win in five frames.
How it Happened vs. No. 18 Baylor
» The Tar Heels scored early with two runs in the first inning off the bats of Kristina Burkhardt and Brittany Pickett. UNC responded to Baylor's four runs in the second with three in the third to reclaim the lead.
