February 23, 2019 | Fencing
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – UNC junior Jackie Litynski earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors and the Tar Heel men placed third in the team competition at Day One of the ACC Fencing Championships, hosted by Boston College at Conte Forum.
Litynski's second-place finish in sabre was the highlight for UNC in the morning's individual women's competition. In pool competition she earned 10 wins to advance to the semifinals as the No. 3 seed. There she beat Notre Dame's Reghan Ward 15-13 to reach the final, where she faced Notre Dame's Kara Linder. Linder won 15-6 to take the gold. Litnyski's silver was enough for all-conference honors, as the top two finishers in each category make up the All-ACC team.
In epee, De Grasse earned 10 wins in pool competition to reach the semifinal for the second year in a row. In the first semifinal match, she fell to the top seed and eventual winner Molly Hudson of Notre Dame, 15-12. Duke's Maria Papadopoulos won the third-place match, 15-9.
In the afternoon, the UNC men faced off against three ACC opponents in the team compeititon. In the first round, the Tar Heels fell to Duke 18-9. In the second round UNC faced top-ranked Notre Dame, falling 21-6.
Carolina closed with a win, knocking off the host Eagles 15-12, with sabre and epee both winning by 6-3 scores. Foil fell by the same score.
The team men's title was Notre Dame's fourth in five years. Duke won last season.
