Tar Heel Women Cap Duke Meet With Win
February 11, 2018 | Fencing
DURHAM, N.C. – The UNC women's fencing team ended the Duke Meet on a high note Sunday, beating Brandeis 17-10 in the final matchup of the day after earlier falling to three ranked teams.
The Tar Heels finished 1-3 on the day, dropping matchups with No. 7 Temple 15-12, No. 3 Penn State 21-6 and No. 10 Duke 16-11.
"The best meet of the day for us was Temple," UNC coach Ron Miller said. "We always fence close with them. The final was 15-12, but it was 12-12 at one point so it could have gone either way. The biggest problem we have with the women's team right now is a lot of injuries and it really showed today."
The Tar Heel men's team fenced on Saturday, finishing 2-2 with wins over Brandeis and Johns Hopkins and losses to Penn State and Duke. Both the wins were by 14-13 scores, but in each case the margin was wider before UNC substituted after clinching the win.
"Against the stronger teams we actually fenced pretty well," Miller said. "Against Duke, the final score was 16-11 – that's really two bouts. There were seven 5-4 bouts and all it takes is two – two touches and that score is revered. So I can't be too disappointed – we had our moments, we had our chances, but we didn't take them and that was the difference in both of the meets."
Five Tar Heels – Andrew Kang, Jackie Litynski, Andrew Fulmer, Bernard Witek and Sylvia Zhu – will compete at Junior Olympics in Memphis Feb. 16-18. Meanwhile most of the team now looks ahead to the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship Feb. 24-25. UNC will host the event at Carmichael Arena.
