The Tar Heels gather to watch Jackie Litynski on Saturday at the Temple Open.
Fevry, Litynski Lead the Pack As Fencing Opens in Philly

Four Tar Heel fencers earned top-six finishes over the weekend as UNC opened the 2018-19 season at the Temple Open.
In the women's competition on Saturday, junior Carlexa Fevry tied for third in foil and junior Jackie Litynski tied for third in sabre. In the men's competition on Sunday, senior Jacob Henkels was sixth in epee and freshman Beni Rabinowitz was sixth in sabre.
Overall, 24 UNC fencers were in the top 32 in their respective weapons and 29 of UNC's 38 competitors finished in the top half of the results.
"What we shoot for in these early season competitions are top-16 and top-32 finishes, and obviously top eight – finals – or top four is even better," UNC coach Ron Miller said. "All in all it was a great tournament."
We didn't have everyone available, but those who were there did outstanding, especially our first-year kids.Probably the best individual performance of a first year was Beni Rabinowitz in sabre – he was second coming out of the pools and ended up sixth."
Rabinowitz was one of seven Tar Heel fencers to drop just one bout over the course of the day's competition.
Among squads, Miller was particularly impressed by men's sabre and women's foil.
Next up for the Tar Heels is the Garret Open at Penn State this Saturday and Sunday (Nov. 3 and 4). It's a similar task in that it's also an individual tournament with no team component involved, but a tougher test than the Temple tournament based on the expected strength of the field.
