Tar Heels Stumble At No. 17 Arizona State
January 21, 2017 | Wrestling
TEMPE, Ariz. --- No. 17 Arizona State took eight of 10 bouts en route to a 31-9 win over North Carolina Friday night at Wells Fargo Arena. Danny Chaid and Joey Ward both had bonus point wins for the Tar Heels, who return home Monday to host NC State in the Brawl At The Hall.
Jacen Peterson (184 pounds) and Anthony Valencia (165) both registered first-period pins for the Sun Devils. Peterson's six-pointer in the opening bout of the night gave the hosts a lead they would not relinquish.
Chaid got Carolina on the board with his third major decision of the year at 197. The junior dominated ASU's Sullivan Cauley to briefly get the Tar Heels within striking distance. But won at both ends of the lineup to take a commanding lead with three straight decisions.
Ward grabbed his team-best 20th win of the season at 141 pounds, a comprehensive 18-2 technical fall over Nikko Villareal. Ward, who will face Kevin Jack in the feature match at the Brawl At The Hall, posted his second straight tech fall and his seventh bonus-point victory of his redshirt senior campaign.
The final match of the night was a top-10 showdown as No. 7 Ethan Ramos faced No. 3 Zahid Valencia at 174. In a rematch of a thrilling 11-10 decision in November, Valencia maintained his undefeated record with a 2-1 win that was decided on riding time.
